The definition of failure analysis
SGMICRO's failure analysis covers the entire process of IC to ensure product quality reliability.
Firstly, FA Team assists R&D in solving problems in the design stage from the source, eliminating quality risks during product development. Secondly, FA Team provides rapid responses to component failures on the production line, offering scientific basis for decision-making to ensure product stability and reliability. Finally, FA Team analyses retuned units from customers. Based on the FA results, SGMICRO can help customers resolve their concerns by taking actions to limit or eliminate the root cause of the failure.
The process of failure analysis
SGMICRO's failure analysis process consists of four main steps:
(1) When the demand department encounters a failure problem, it puts forward the FA requirements to the FA team, verifies and confirms the validity of the failure according to the opinions of the FA team, and integrates the failure information and failure background of the requirements.
(2) The FA team analyzes and verifies the failure characteristics of electrical performance through a series of analytical instruments or cooperation with other teams (R&D, testing, application), and uses non-destructive electrical performance analysis to speculate on possible failure locations and failure modes.
(3) The FA team uses the corresponding analysis equipment to conduct physical analysis according to the electrical performance characteristics of the failed chip, and cooperates with other teams (R&D, testing, application) to promote the analysis process and find its failure location and failure mode according to the needs.
(4) The FA team integrates the failure results and conclusions and communicates them to the demand department, and feeds the results back to the corresponding responsible related departments to implement changes to limit or eliminate the cause of failure.

Failure confirmation and providing sufficient failure background information are very important for fast and accurate failure analysis. It helps SGMICRO to investigate the cause of failure and solve failure problems quickly.
Customers should take reasonable and necessary precautions when submitting a failure analysis request to ensure that there is no electrical or physical damage to the failed product. It is needed to maintain the package testability of returned units when SGMICRO receives them.
The failure background information should be confirmed when submitting a failure analysis request, including the customer's failure history & failure number & failure rate; the failure scene and application conditions; whether the failed product has undergone ABA testing to confirm the failure status, and the production lot of the failed product.
